The earliest sets of Split Enz costumes were based on traditional forms of entertainment such as circus and vaudeville. The New Clownz reflect these influences and were associated with the album Second Thoughts.

During this period Crombie began to experiment with fabric dyes which were colourful but subject to considerable fading.
