Introduction
Split Enz have always been associated with a theatrical approach to performance. Like other bands of the 1970s, theatrical costuming and make-up became an integral part of Split Enz's identity. Noel Crombie, percussionist and later drummer, was largely responsible for the development of the band's unique visual style. Noel began taking an active role in designing stage sets and costumes as early as 1973. Many of his ideas were drawn from classic forms of entertainment such as circus and music hall. He combined these influences with his own personal style, incorporating exaggerated shapes, over-sized buttons, applique, ultra-violet fabrics and hand-painting. Each set of costumes has a name such as New Clownz, Dizrythmia and The U V's and is based around a theme. Most of the sets were designed in association with a particular album release or tour. Comprising
of 18 sets of costumes covering the period 1974 to 1984 The Split Enz
Collection forms a significant part of the Performing Arts Museum Collection.
The Collection also includes costume designs, make-up and photographs
and provides a unique glimpse at the creative process behind the band's
image. |
