About
Leading Ladies
Leading Ladies celebrates the careers
of six Australian leading ladies of musical
theatre: Nancye Hayes, Toni Lamond, Caroline
O'Connor, Jill Perryman, Marina Prior and Geraldine
Turner.
These stars
of the stage each enthusiastically accepted
an invitation to be the subject of a recorded
interview and photographic portrait. Undertaken
during 2003-2004, the interviews and photographs
were commissioned by the Arts Centre to become
a permanent part of the Performing Arts Collection.
They will be preserved and made available for
future research and exhibition.
Interviews
The interviews were conducted by arts journalist
Simon Plant, who had approached the Arts Centre
with the idea of recording conversations with
these leading ladies. Rather than simply covering
biographical information, the interviews explore
each performer's approach to her work. Topics
including auditions, rehearsals, stage fright,
routines and rituals, encouraged the participants
to share their experiences and feelings related
to performing. Each interview recorded 1 - 2
hours of discussion and provides a valuable
insight into musical theatre in Australia.
Photographs
Jeff Busby, one of Australia's leading performing
arts photographers, was commissioned to undertake
the second stage of the project. The location
and style of the portraits were determined in
conjunction with each performer, and represent
their personality and theatrical associations.
The resulting photographs present a visual record
of the leading ladies and can be displayed individually
or as a series.
