Temporary exhibitions, such as Drawn to the Stage, give a tantalising insight into the Arts Centre’s expansive Performing Arts Collection. This nationally significant collection is permanently housed in an onsite climate-controlled storage facility within the Hamer Hall building.
The majority of Performing Arts Collection’s holdings of stage design are works on paper. For their long-term preservation the designs are kept in acid-free solander boxes, protected from the adverse effects of light, dust and physical damage.
The development of new technologies over the past decade has allowed for an increasing number of items to be available online, and the Arts Centre’s websiteprovides a gateway to the Performing Arts Collection for virtual visitors.

Over the last three years, a review of the stage design collection has resulted in a significant increase in the number of imaged online records, which augment the selection of works in Drawn to the Stage. In addition to over 300 designs included in Drawn to the Stage, the work of nearly 80 designers can be accessed online.
Virtual visitors can peruse a selection of works from the Louis Kahan Collection, including designs for Australian and European productions; the Laurel Martyn Collection of designs commissioned for her Ballet Guild; the Barry Humphries Collection, with Stephen Adnitt’s fabulously quirky costume designs for Dame Edna Everage’s wardrobe; and the Frank Hinder Collection, with designs by this acclaimed Australian artist for opera and theatre.
Following is a selected list of Australian and international stage designers represented in the Performing Arts Collection at present. Designers highlighted in bold are represented in Drawn to the Stage, while works by designers listed in blue can be accessed online at any time.
